Why a tupperdor beats a cheap wooden humidor

Inexpensive wooden humidors under £100 often have imperfect seals around their lip, leaky glass tops, or thin veneer that leaches moisture in centrally heated British winter air. You spend all winter recharging humidifiers while your cigars slowly dry out.

An airtight storage container (such as Sistema Klip It or Lock & Lock) with rubberised gasket clamps creates a true hermetic seal. No moisture escapes. Once you drop in a 65% humidity pack, the internal RH stays dead flat month after month.

The 65% vs 69% rule for airtight containers

In a wooden cedar humidor, wood constantly breathes and absorbs moisture, so 69% packs are standard to maintain an actual internal RH of 65-67%.

In an airtight plastic container, none of the water vapour escapes. If you put a 69% or 72% pack in a sealed plastic box, the RH can creep up to 71-73%, which risks tobacco mould and tight, plugged draws. For any plastic tupperdor or Pelican travel case, always choose 65% humidity control.

Step-by-step tupperdor setup

1. Buy a BPA-free container with locking clips and a silicone gasket (e.g. 2L to 7L volume).

2. Wash the container with warm water and mild unscented washing-up liquid, rinse thoroughly, and leave it to air dry completely for 24 hours to eliminate any factory plastic smell.

3. (Optional) Place a thin Spanish cedar sheet or cedar tray at the bottom for aroma and moisture buffering.

4. Place one 60g 65% Boveda pack per 25 cigars of capacity.

5. Add a calibrated digital hygrometer, seal the clips, and let it stabilise for 2 hours before loading your cigars.
