How long do cigars last?
Cigars do not have an expiry date. Kept between 65% and 70% relative humidity at 16-20°C they last indefinitely and many improve for years. Left loose in a centrally heated British room they dry out and become harsh within about a week. What kills a cigar is humidity, not age.

Cigars dry out, they do not expire
A cigar is fermented tobacco leaf, not a perishable food. There is no date at which it becomes unsafe. What changes is moisture content, and moisture is what carries the flavour compounds and controls how evenly the thing burns.
At the right humidity a cigar holds its oils and keeps developing. Below about 60% relative humidity the wrapper starts to shrink, the leaf goes brittle, and the smoke turns hot and papery. Above about 75% it will not draw properly and mould becomes a real risk. The window most people aim for is 65% to 70%.
This is why the British winter is the problem it is. A centrally heated living room commonly sits at 25-30% relative humidity, which is drier than a lot of deserts. A cigar left out in that will be noticeably worse in days.
How long each kind of storage really buys you
A humidor with a working seal and a 69% Boveda pack holds cigars indefinitely. Check the pack every few months and swap it when it goes stiff.
An airtight food container — a "tupperdor" — with a Boveda pack does almost the same job for a fraction of the money. For anything under a couple of boxes it is genuinely hard to justify a cabinet.
A zip-lock bag with a Boveda pack will hold cigars in good order for months. It is the standard way to travel with them.
The cellophane sleeve a cigar ships in slows moisture loss but does not stop it. On its own, in a drawer, expect two to four weeks before the difference is obvious.
Ageing, and whether it is worth it
Cuban cigars in particular are widely held to improve with age. The harshness of a young cigar settles, the flavours knit together, and ammonia from fermentation blows off. Five to ten years is a common range, and some boxes are kept far longer.
New World cigars are usually blended to smoke well on release, so the case for long ageing is weaker, though a year or two of rest rarely hurts.
Ageing only works if the humidity is stable. A cigar that has swung between dry and damp for five years is not an aged cigar, it is a damaged one.
How to tell a cigar has gone
Roll it gently between your fingers. A cigar in condition gives slightly and springs back. One that crackles or feels hollow has dried out.
Look at the foot. Cracked or lifting wrapper at either end means it has lost too much moisture.
A dried cigar can sometimes be brought back by rehydrating it slowly — days, not hours, and never by putting water near it directly — but a cigar that has dried and been rehydrated rarely tastes like it should. Most of the oils have already gone.
